Bones, muscles and joints form the basis of the musculoskeletal system. They grow and change in our lifetime. They are susceptible to many changes and possibilities of disorders are many. Some of the disorders relating to bones, joints and muscles are enumerated below:
Inflammation of joints is common among elderly individuals. It causes pain and stiffness in the cartilage and lining of the joints. Such inflammation is known as arthritis where hip, knee and shoulder bones become weak with the age. Injections and physical therapy are preferred in the early stage of arthritis by our doctors. Joint replacement surgery is referred to advance arthritis stage. Osteoarthritis is seen in the middle-aged individuals when the cartilage on the ends of bones wears down. It becomes severe in the elderly individual mainly affecting the knees, hips and spine. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder affecting the lining of the joints in the hands and feet. Such patients have inflammation, pain and swelling in the bones resulting in bone erosion and joint deformity. Rheumatoid arthritis is more seen in the middle-aged individuals affecting both sides of the body simultaneously. Septic arthritis is a condition when the infection spreads to a joint, causing inflammation with pain and swelling in the knees.
A skin condition having red patches of skin with silvery scales leads to psoriasis. They have joint pain, stiffness and swelling. When left untreated, they have severe damage to joints. Steroid injections and medication to reduce inflammation are preferred.
Spinal the disc is soft and is susceptible to change with age. They act as shock absorbers for the spine, allowing one to bend and twist. With the age, there is a loss of fluid, tears and cracks which lead to severe pain. Such severe pain in neck, arm and leg lead to degenerative disc disease. Our physicians recommend hot or cold packs and pain relievers for such patients.
A constant grey pain, being fatigued and having a disruption in sleep affecting the mood is the cause for fibromyalgia mostly seen among the women. Having a condition of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or lupus are more prone to develop fibromyalgia. The cause for the condition is still ambiguous and is related to genetics, psychological or physical trauma or infections. Our physician will prescribe both medication and self-care to help manage the symptoms and improve general health.
Accumulation of uric acid in the joints can lead to severe pain, swelling and redness in the joints. The condition is termed as Gout as certain foods eaten in excess can trigger gout, including shellfish, red meat, organ meat, and beverages. Our physician-prescribed medications to treat the pain, reduce inflammation and lower the uric acid in the joint.
Lupus is an autoimmune disorder that can damage the skin, joints, kidneys and/or other organs. Such an inflammatory disease has symptoms like fatigue, headaches, swollen joints, fever, and a butterfly-shaped rash across the cheeks and nose. Lupus is treated with medications that reduce inflammation and the immune system.
Fractures, sprains, plantar fasciitis and bunions are some of the foot and ankle injuries. Fractures, carpal tunnel syndromes, tendinitis, cartilage injuries and tears are some of the common conditions in Hand, Wrist and Elbow injuries. Musculoskeletal medicine helps in treating conditions of musculoskeletal trauma and Injuries affecting the muscles and bones. Anti-inflammatory medications are preferred in the condition where the cartilage becomes inflamed in the condition of Polychondrosis.
A cancerous tumour of the bone issues is the sarcoma tissues that connect, support or surround the body's organs and structures which are removed by the surgeons by image-guided needle biopsy or open biopsy. Spine related deformity is attended by the orthopaedic physicians working in The Spine Center to provide the patient's treatment options. A condition when the blood vessels are damaged and the blood is not flowing to the organs and tissues, such a condition is Vasculitis. Medications can reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system. Visceral pain occurs when there is damage or disruption to internal organs and tissues. The pain occurs in the pelvis, abdomen, chest or intestines, where pain relievers or other medications are prescribed to help alleviate the pain. When the neck and head are being suddenly forced backwards and then forward, putting the spine through extreme stress, such a condition is termed as Whiplash. Applying an ice pack can prevent further swelling of the neck and reducing pain. Pain Medication is also prescribed by our physicians.
