Psychiatry falls under the medical fraternity that includes diagnosis, prevention and treatment of mental problems, emotional and behavioural disorders. These disorders include different kinds of mal-adaptations to mood, perception, identity of the self, cognition and behaviour.

Initial assessment of any patient basically begins with examining the mental status and case history. Physical examinations following by psychological tests could be conducted. On certain occasions, several techniques like neuroimaging and neurophysical are used. There is combined treatment of psychotherapy and psychiatric medication that has been the most common mode of treatment of psychiatry. Psychotherapy covers Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT); Deep brain stimulation (DBS), Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), and Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Light therapy is used to treat seasonal depression. Currently, psychiatric treatment follows modalities like assertive community treatment, community reinforcement, and supported employment. The treatment is offered in inpatient and outpatient mode.

Counselling:

Counselling is an important approach in the treatment of psychosomatic disorders. It enables a person to talk freely about their problems and feelings in a conducive atmosphere. A counsellor possesses immense patience to listen to the patient with empathy. Counselling can take place either face to face, individually or in a group, over the phone, by email, or using a specialised computer programme. Counselling helps removing depression, anxiety; borderline personality disorder (BPD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stresses disorder (PTSD), long-term illnesses, eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia nervosa and lastly drug abuse.
