Sleep Disorders

Sleep disorders are a condition which affects the daily routine of proper sleep. Several students as well as adults experienced it due to high-stress levels and packed up schedules for every day. If the problem of not getting enough sleep continues on a day-to-day basis, they can be suffering from a sleep disorder. As per observed, people are getting less sleep than 8 hours and suffering from numerous aftereffects of it. Deprivation of proper sleep usually affects their work, concentration, health, also mental health. There are several categories of sleeping disorders with different issues and problems. They can easily be cured with proper medications and guidelines and finding the underlying cause and getting treated.

Types of sleep disorders

There are various kinds of sleep disorders, all differ in their effects and causes. The treatment and diagnosis also are accordingly prescribed by their health care provider. Major types of sleeping disorders include;

?? Insomnia :

Insomnia is a well-known sleeping disorder that causes people to have a hard time falling asleep at night or staying asleep. It can be either Acute or Chronic. Insomnia results in health issues such as irritation, anxiety, difficulty concentration, many more. Insomnia is of two types: primary insomnia and secondary insomnia.

  • Primary insomnia refers to the inability to sleep is not due to any health issues.
  • Secondary insomnia refers to the inability to sleep is due to health problems such as asthma,   arthritis, cancer, etc.
  • Sleep Apnea: Sleep Apnea is a serious health-related issue. During sleep, the body is unable to take enough oxygen in and causes the person to wake up. There are two types of sleep apnea :

Central Sleep Apnea: It refers to a certain problem related to the connection between muscles and the brain which controls breathing.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea: It refers to the stoppage of airflow because the airway space is too narrow or obstructed.

?? Parasomnias :

Parasomnias is a group of sleeping disorders that causes strange behaviors and movements while sleeping, which may include;

  • Talking while asleep
  • Sleepwalking
  • Clenching jaws
  • Groaning
  • Nightmares

?? Narcolepsy :

It is a neurological condition where the individual has almost no control over their sleep. They usually suffer from extreme drowsiness during the day. They can simply fall asleep at any particular time during any activity. One after waking up suffers from sleep paralysis. While the real cause of narcolepsy has not been found, but experts are looking for a connection of gene to this disorder.

Symptoms of sleep disorders

The symptoms of the sleep disorders vary from one to another following the severity and the type of disorder one has. The general symptoms of sleeping disorders are;

  • Excessive irritation or anxiety.
  • Daytime fatigue.
  • Abnormal movement or behavior while asleep.
  • Sudden change in sleeping patterns .
  • Weight gain.
  • Depression .
  • Loss of concentration and focus.
  • Problem falling asleep.

Causes of sleep disorders

There are several conditions and diseases which can be the cause of sleep deprivation. It also occurs due to some health complications as in;

  • Stress and anxiety: It has been seen often that stress and anxiety put a rather negative effect on one’s sleeping schedule.
  • Allergies and respiratory problems: Allergies and cold cause a problem breathing and it can cause discomfort in sleeping.
  • Chronic pain: Chronic pain consistently affects a person’s sleep cycle and even wakes them up in the middle of the night. Some general pain is constant lower back pain, headaches, arthritis, etc.
